Ayurvedic Lifestyle Recommendations for the Summer

Ayurvedic Lifestyle Recommendations for the Summer

In Ayurveda, summer is characterized by intense heat, dryness, and longer days. The Pitta dosha—governing heat, metabolism, and transformation—tends to accumulate during this season. To stay balanced, Ayurveda recommends a lifestyle that cools, calms, and hydrates the body and mind.

1. Diet
Favor:

  • Cooling, hydrating foods: cucumber, melons, grapes, coconut water

  • Sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes

  • Light grains: rice, wheat, barley

  • Dairy: ghee, milk, fresh buttermilk (chaas)

  • Herbs/spices: fennel, coriander, mint, cardamom, rose

Avoid:

  • Spicy, sour, salty, fried, or fermented foods

  • Heavy meats, yogurt at night, pickles

  • Too much coffee, chai, and carbonated drinks

2. Daily Routine (Dinacharya)

  • Wake early, around sunrise, when the air is cool and calm

  • Avoid excessive exertion, including intense workouts during the day

  • Take cool showers, especially after being in the sun

  • Wear light cotton clothes in white or pastel shades

  • Use natural cooling oils like sandalwood or coconut oil for body massage (abhyanga)

  • Apply rose water or cucumber slices to soothe eyes

3. Mind & Emotions

  • Practice calming activities: meditation, journaling, quiet walks at sunrise or sunset

  • Spend time near natural bodies of water, like lakes or rivers

  • Avoid arguments or stress, as these increase Pitta (irritability, anger)

  • Practice cooling pranayama

4. Sleep & Rest

  • Take short daytime naps (unlike in winter, it's allowed in summer) to prevent fatigue

  • Sleep in a well-ventilated, cool room

  • Avoid late-night screen time, which aggravates Pitta and disrupts sleep

5. Stay Hydrated

  • Drink herbal infusions: fennel water, coriander seed water, or rose-infused water

  • Avoid ice-cold drinks; choose room temperature or mildly cool beverages
